Stories from Our Farmers

The story of Sabatia FCS is also the story of its farmers — their work, their families, and the progress they have built together over the years.

A Journey of Change

Growing Together, One Farm at a Time

Paul Serem has been a member of Sabatia FCS since 1999. Living in Sabatia Settlement Scheme, his journey began with one cow, given to him by his father.

In those early years, milk was paid at about KSh 8 per litre, but payments were often uncertain. Farmers could go months, and sometimes years, without receiving what they were owed.

A turning point came in 2015 with the election of a new board. The cooperative began to change. Milk prices became more consistent, rising from KSh 28 to KSh 56 per litre by October 2026.

The introduction of value addition brought further progress. Members began receiving annual bonuses, with one of Paul's most memorable moments being a KSh 100,000 bonus received in December.

But for Paul, the cooperative's value goes beyond the price of milk. When his father fell ill in 2018/19, he was able to access a farmer advance quickly when his family needed support. The system, linked to the volume of milk a farmer produces, also encourages members to increase their production.

“The cooperative has been part of my journey for many years. Today, what I produce on my farm not only earns me an income — it gives me support when my family needs it.”

Accountability & Leadership

When Members Lead, the Cooperative Grows Stronger

Our Roots

Founded in 1963, Sabatia FCS was built to bring farmers together, market their milk, and help members improve their livelihoods.

The Challenge

The cooperative faced debts of KSh 13.6 million, putting pressure on its finances and the resources members had built together.

Members Took Action

Through an AGM in 2015, members elected their leaders and pushed for stronger financial controls, clearer records, and a plan to manage the debts.

The Progress

Reported debts fell from KSh 13.6 million to KSh 4.4 million, while members' share capital grew beyond KSh 16 million.

A Stronger Cooperative

Better financial management and accountability help protect the cooperative's future.
